Wait to Respond

By: Isiason Brown

Wait three days, and see if

it still bothers you. What

happens when it’s been three

years? What response is there

to closed hearts? An apology

to deaf ears?

I’ve cried out so many times,

I don’t know if I believe in the

divine. There are only so many

ways to say let me hold onto

the light I so desperately crave.

I tried being a musician only

to return to poetry, so understand

what it means to find true love.

You grieve for what you’ve never

lost, when love is pure and true,

the essence never leaves you.

The way I hear my Grandmother’s

voice telling me to “just be friends”

or asking what would Jesus do?

Anything left undefined

and unrefined is no friend of mine.

Your attempts at nails and bolts

will only lead to revolt,

the true soul yearns to be free —

now to ask myself what freedom

really means.
